Two goals against in two games and none in their favour have seen Morocco exit the 2018 World Cup in Russia after 180 minutes of football. Two slender lossers (1-0 on both occasions) against Iran and Portugal mean they are the first team to be eliminated from the finals.
They needed to get at least a point against Portugal on Wednesday to keep their hopes of reaching the round of 16 alive after defeat against Iran. But those hopes began to disappear as early as the fourth minute when an unmarked Cristiano Ronaldo headed home from a corner.
Morocco spent the remainder of the match playing some nice football and getting close to Rui Patricio's goal but their finishing let them down and they were beaten 1-0, their World Cup exit confirmed. They won't be the last but they are the first to be heading home, representing a disappointing finale for a side some thought could provide a surprise.
