Villarreal have announced a one-year loan deal for Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, who will help to fill in during Sergio Asenjo's long injury absence.
This is the third loan deal for the goalkeeper within the last three seasons, having previously played for teams such as Lens, where he helped them to achieve promotion, and with Bastia where he had an excellent campaign in France's top division.
Areola is a goalkeeper with the French national youth categories, with whom he won the U20 World Cup, after being one of the key men in the side. He is known for his commanding reach and stands at 191 centimetres tall, meaning that he can command his area well, on top of having good reflexes.
Villarreal have decided to loan the young goalkeeper in order to replace the injured Sergio Asenjo next season, with impressive reports written up about the goalkeeper within the club.
The club looked for a loan rather than a permanent transfer, as they hope to reintroduce Sergio Asenjo into the first-team as soon as possible after his recovery from injury.
His arrival means that the club will have two goalkeepers for the start of the season, Juan Carlos Sanchez and Alphonse Areola. However, Villarreal hope that Sergio Asenjo will be able to rejoin the squad for the second half of the league campaign.
