The Maxi Gomez saga has drawn to an end. West Ham's final offer to pay the striker's 50 million euro release clause to Celta Vigo came too late. Gomez wanted to continue to ply his trade in Spain and he will do so under Marcelino at Copa del Rey winners Valencia.
West Ham pushed hard for the Uruguay international but it wasn't enough. Despite the bigger offer on the table, and his agents pushing for a move to England, he stood firm in his desire to play for Valencia, who will be in the Champions League this season.
Celta were also happy to do the deal with Valencia. They will only get 14.5 million euros, but they will also get striker Santi Mina on a permanent basis and defender Jorge Saenz on loan for two seasons. Mina returns to the club where he first made his name in La Liga.
