Julen Lopetegui has said his farewalls to the Spanish national team. With everything in full disarray, the now former coach spoke behind closed doors with the team. The president of the Spanish FA, the RFEF, confirmed this during the press conference to the media.
The core of this Spain group have proven to be Lopetegui's strongest supporters. The dressing room didn't want him to leave and some of the senior members of the squad even tried to stop the Spanish FA from sacking the head coach. They felt, with them being just over 48 hours away from their opening match against Portugal, it would be best to leave everything as it was.
Lopetegui thanked the players for their support and, sources close to SPORT have confirmed, asked that the squad be completely united and focused on the tournament at hand. He insisted that this squad has every possibility to win the World Cup.
This was his message before cancelling the press conference he was supposed to attend.
