Barcelona end another season with disappointment, with the year being remembered more for defeats than for the merit of winning another league.
Ernesto Valverde's side were deservedly beaten by a Valencia side who were more dynamic and more solid, but at least this time they fought, they reacted to a disastrous half an hour and didn't repeat the image they offered at Anfield. The Barça that began the Copa del Rey final, though, was the one that slumped at Anfield.
Valencia realised Barça were there for the taking and went for the jugular. Rodrigo could have scored early on but Pique cleared off the line. They smelt blood and it wasn't too long before their goals arrived. When Barça appeared it was thanks to Messi's reaction. Pique also deserves a special mention.
SQUAD NEEDS CHANGING
Losing the cup final is not the most serious thing to happen this season, but it's the final proof that there are defects in this team which can no longer be hidden. The squad needs rejuvenating because the team is worn out physically and has collapsed psychologically. It needs fresh oxygen.
There needs to be more than just Messi. We don't want Barça to become a cheap copy of Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls. There needs to be a shake up because the team ends the season sad and without energy.
Everyone at every level of the club is affected: the players, Valverde and Bartomeu's board. Everyone is responsible, too. A busy summer is coming.
