Carles Aleñá ganó la partida a Wakaso en el Alavés - FC Barcelona

An Aleñá is always better than a Rabiot

Barça needed to be patient in order to find a way through against Alaves. It came as no great surprise the cutting edge, that moment of quality, came from Carles Aleña. Whenever the La Masia graduate has been handed a chance, he's proven his worth. Alongside the likes of Riqui Puig, the famous academy system looks as strong as ever.

Aleña knows the ethos at Barça better than anybody but he also possesses a goalscoring instinct. His extraordinary goal last night, linking up well with another graduate Sergi Roberto, showed that La Masia's influence still runs deep at the club.

It was also another positive mark on Ernesto Valverde's tenure. He's faced criticism for not playing Aleña more but now, with the youngster desperate to impress whenever he's given a chance, he's created yet another weapon in Barça's arsenal. The strength and depth of the squad is no longer under question as, with rising expectations, the youngsters have stepped up to stake a claim for playing a larger part.

But that also comes with its own difficulties. Everyone feels important and enjoys each success, something which hasn't happened under any coach for a few years now. He's shown once again that the smartest signing, the best signing, is always one from the academy. Aleña's role proves that the club doesn't need someone like Adrien Rabiot. If he had arrived, it would probably have limited Aleña's playing time and stunted his progression.

The saying never fails: before you search outside, look within.
