Robert Moreno’s side took the lead through Saul Niguez’s strike just after half-time, an effort on the bounce which Norway goalkeeper Rune Jarstein could and should have repelled.

The game was tight and even and Norway created danger in the Spanish area, if not clear cut chances.

Fabian Ruiz struck the post for Spain but they could not hold on to the three points, with goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga fouling Omar Elabdellaoui in stoppage time.

Joshua King slotted home the resulting penalty to earn Norway a 1-1 draw.

Spain stay top of Group F with 19 points from seven games, ahead of Sweden, who are on 14 after they beat Malta 4-0 thanks to a Sebastian Larsson penalty double.

“We played a great game but we couldn’t take the three points, we have to continue,” said Spain midfielder Fabian.
