With his participation in Atletico Madrid's game against Villarreal on Saturday, Diego Godin overtook Luis Amaranto Perea as the foreign player with the most appearances for the club (315 official games).

The Uruguayan defender joined the club in 2010 from Villarreal and since then has been a mainstay in the middle of the defence, especially since the appointment of Diego Simeone.

Of Godin's 315 games, 312 have been starts and he has been really important to their success in recent years. He has played 223 games in La Liga, 45 in the Champions League, 23 in the Copa del Rey, 17 in the Europa League, four in the Spanish Super Cup and two in the European Super Cup.

It was in the European Super Cup that he made his Atletico debut. On Aug. 27, 2010, he played in a 2-0 win against Inter Milan, who were coached by Rafael Benitez at the time.

Since then he has won five more trophies with the Rojiblanco: Europa League 2011/2012, European Super Cup 2012, Copa del Rey 2012/2013, La Liga 2013/2014 and Spanish Super Cup 2014.

Perhaps his highlight came on May 17, 2014, when he scored the header at Camp Nou which enable Atletico to win their first league title in 18 years.

Seven years after his debut, Godin remains a key piece of Simeone's team and he will continue to add to his appearance tally as Atletico seek to make history at their new home, the Wanda Metropolitano.
