In an interview published on the RFEF's website, Ansu Fati explained how he learned he had been called up by Spain U21s last week.
Ansu, 16, was added to the squad after Carles Perez withdrew with an injury. He would have been in the initial squad but FIFA had not cleared his paperwork in time.
"I was in the car on the way to get some food with some friends," Ansu said. "And my dad called me: 'Have you seen what has come out?' I said I hadn't and he said: 'You've been called up by the national team.' I asked him when I had to leave and he said that same afternoon. I went home, got changed and got on the plane."
Ansu says the call up caught him by surprise: "I was surprised because I didn't expect it. It's been a while that I have wanted to play for the national team and I want to thank the Federation, who made a huge effort (with obtaining a passport) so I could come. Now it's about enjoying it."
On his adaption, he added. "I already knew a few of the guys from Barcelona: Eric (Garcia), (Marc) Cucurella, (Juan) Miranda... The coach told me to be calm and that there's a good group of players here. It's going to be an unforgettable year."
Finally, Ansu said that "it's an honour to be here and I am going to give everything."
