The Copa Libertadores final between River Plate and Boca Juniors takes place at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday night and there was a story saying Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo would sit next to each other in the presidential box to watch the game. Both were invited but in the end only Messi will go, say AS.
Cristiano declined the opportunity offered by the federation because "it is too soon to return to the Bernabeu".
Ronaldo spent nine years there but left in the summer to Juventus.
"His relationship to the club is still hurting after his exit to Juventus and that has affected it," said AS. "Cristiano would love to go to the game and watch it with Messi but unfortunately this time it cannot be."
The RFEF think that "the presence of Cristiano with Messi would be a good message for football".
