Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are racing to beat each other to be the top goalscorer of 2018. FC Barcelona’s D10S, Messi, has 47 goals in the calendar year, three more than Juventus’ CR7. However the Argentine has only one more match left to play, while Ronaldo has three with Juve.
Both players have won five Ballon d’Ors, but in the Golden Shoe races Messi is ahead by one, five to four, receiving the fifth this week.
Messi has hit 47 goals for club and country in 2018 and faces Celta Vigo with Barcelona on Saturday. That is his last opportunity to add to his tally.
Ronaldo has 44 for Madrid, Juve and Portugal, but faces Roma on Dec 22, Atalanta on Dec 26 and Sampdoria on Dec 29.
The duo have few rivals. Robert Lewandowski of Bayern Munich has 42 goals but only one game left, against Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday.
Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann has 38 and one game against Espanyol remaining.
Harry Kane has 37 with three Spurs matches to go. He beat Messi last year with 56 goals, two more than the Argentine.
