Samuel Umtiti and Barcelona are speaking over the renewal of his deal which expires in 2021. Through his agent Umtiti has expressed his desire to sign on for a futher five seasons. His case is curious because the club wnat to renew his deal during the season, rather than in the summer, even though he has two and a half more years to go on his deal. The reason is that he has had a lot of suitors during the winter transfer window and only a 60m release clause.
Umtiti arived in 2016 from Lyon and became a starter from then onwards. He is one of the best defenders around and has a huge future ahead of him.
OFFER FROM MANCHESTER UNITED
This winter he received an offer from Man United, who wanted to pay his release fee and give him a much better deal than he's getting at Barca. Barcelona directors spoke to him to get him to avoid the offer and Umtiti agreed, ignorning Jose Mourinho, who wanted him. The Portuguese coach had no problem paying his clause, given City bought Laporte for 65m and Liverpool spent 80 on Virgil Van Dijk.
Umtiti will sign a deal until 2023-24, when he will be 29.
The renewal has two aspects. Umtiti is likely to start for France at the Russia World Cup, so Barcelona will take the first steps now to set up the deal, so both they and Umtiti can be calm, although he will likely not sign it until the start of next season.
The other important aspect is the salary offered to Umtiti by Man United. It was between 5-6 million a year net. Barcelona wanted to give him a pay rise, but his demands are elevated because of the offer from United. There is a long way to go in the deal.
