You have to learn from your mistakes and that's exactly what Roma sporting director Monchi hopes to do with Domenico Berardi. After seeing Malcom slip away at the last moment, the former Sevilla director does not want to lose another battle to Barcelona.
As well as Roma, Barça have been following the Sassuolo forward closely. At 24, Berardi is an international with Italy and stands out in all areas of his game. He has a great left foot, is strong physically and at 1.83m has a big presence around defenders. Above all in the area, where he's proven to be a goal scorer.
Despite his size, Berardi always starts from the right, where his quality adn ability to beat a man convert him into a complete attacker. Said in other words, the Italian can play perfectly as a No.9.
He still has room to improve, too, and his quality has caught the attention of Europe's biggest clubs. But it is Roma who have the most interest in him, given they tried to sign him in the summer. Knowing of Barça's interest, Monchi hopes to avoid a repeat of the Malcom situation and will do everything he can to prevent the Catalans getting their hands on him.
Barça know they're OK for a central striker at the moment but in the medium-term they're not so sure. Luis Suarez has no guaranteed back up and will turn 32 this season. The club do not want to rest on their laurels.
Berardi, who has a contract until 2022 with Sassuolo, would cost around 25-30 million euros. Remember that Barça and the Serie A club have a good relationship, too, after Brazilian centre-back Marlon Santos moved the other way earlier this summer.
