Jordi Alba's new contract has not been sorted out as quickly as he would have hoped. However, according to club sources, the left-back wants a new improved deal because he feels his current terms are not consistent with his performances on the pitch. His contract expires in 2020, too, when he will be 32, and he wants to guarantee his future beyond then.
Alba, 29 at the moment, has sent a message to the club without results because the first contact between his agent and Barcelona's sporting director was not especially positibe. The player's demand, according to club sources, were a long way away from what the club expected.
However, Barça don't plan on braking the negotiations but they also won't heed to Alba's demands. Contact has continued without any big advances because the club are happy to wait until the end of the season.
Meanwhile, the club are aware there could be other offers. Manchester United and Juventus have been linked with the defender. But Alba, who renewed in 2015, has more than 18 months to run on his deal still. "Let them come and pay the clause [if they want him]," is Barça's line of thinking in relation to Alba's 150 million euros release clause.
Alba's absence from the Spain team and the lack of agreement with his club has not affected his form. He continues to be key for Barcelona, one of Lionel Messi's best partners on the pitch -- and even scoring goals when Messi is not there!
