With Samuel Umtiti injured, signing a centre-back in January was being weighed up by Barcelona. After an injury to Thomas Vermaelen against Levante, an additional defender is more necessary than every and the club are looking at various options.
Gerard Pique and Clement Lenglet are the only fit centre-backs available to Ernesto Valverde. In Valencia, after Vermaelen's injury, Arthur Melo came on and Ivan Rakitic dropped into the back three.
One option before turning to the transfer market is Chumi. The Barça B defender has been involved with the first team this season and has always done well. However, Valverde's in favour of having a more experienced option.
The favourite is Chelsea's Christensen. Barça have floated the idea to his people and they were keen on the option of moving to Camp Nou. Last season the Dane was a regular at Stamford Bridge but he's been dropped since Maurizio Sarri was appointed coach in the summer.
It's true that he's usually involved in the matchday squad, but he's not getting minutes. He would be happy to move to Barça, but Chelsea don't want to negotiate a six-month loan deal.
There are other names on the table and in the coming days Barça will decide what centre-back to sign in January.
