Andre Schurrle and Mesut Ozil sink spirited Algeria

Andre Schurrle and Mesut Ozil helped Germany set up a quarter-final with France after a pulsating clash with Algeria.

The Africans took the game to Germany in the first half, with Sofiane Feghouli firing wide when he should have played the ball back into the box.

Islam Slimani scored a brilliant diving header after 17 minutes but it was correctly ruled out for offside

Algeria were on the attack, paying no regard to Germany's status and the way they put Portugal to the sword.

Faouzi Ghoulam darted into the box before dragging his strike across Manuel Neuer's goal.

Neuer was kept extremely busy and was often rushing out of his box to mop up early.

It led to several dangerous looking situations but the goalkeeper was usually in control.

Rais M'Bolhi was under attack at the other end, making several stunning saves, including deflecting Philipp Lahm's long-distance strike over with his fingertips.

He produced an even better one to deny Thomas Muller, whose bullet header from close range seemed destined to find the net.

Muller than prodded inches wide, with M'Bolhi's goal leading a charmed life.

Two minutes into extra time, Germany struck. Schurrle hooked the ball brilliantly into the net with a back-heel after Muller's low cut-back was just behind him.

That was it, for Algeria. Try as they might they could not get back into the game and Mesut Ozil rounded it off at the death, blasting home after a Schurrle shot was blocked.

Algeria grabbed one back through Abdelmoumene Djabou, but with only 40 seconds remaining, they did not have enough.
