The Catalan defender's comments after the Athletic game have been in the spotlight

Gerard Pique says what no-one else dares to say: that la Liga and the Copa del Rey are dangerously prepared for Real Madrid to win them. The lamentable (to label them one way) refereeing performances over recent days, brazenly benefitting Madrid and even more brazenly prejudicing Barça, are confirmation that there is a plot to clear the way to the titles for Zinedine Zidane’s side.

And it’s that the influence which comes from the Santiago Bernabeu could prove definitive this year. Florentino Perez has tired of not winning in Spain and has put all his weapons of ‘seduction’ into action to make possible in the offices what is not possible on the pitch. That is what Pique has complained about. That there are too many coincidences to think that they are just that, coincidences. It’s that the referees, as well as being bad, have a suspicious tendency to give a hand (or two) to Madrid when they most need it.

The problem is that it should not be Pique who calls out this plot. The player is too exposed. So much so that it can go wrong. Pique is performing the role of captain, spokesman and president. And he doesn’t actually hold any of those three roles. I don’t doubt that he made the complaint from his deepest indignation as a Barça fan. And he has taken on the anger of millions of other supporters as such. Because he is more Cule than anyone. But it’s not a player’s responsibility to do so much.

There are people inside the club that should show their faces in these situations to preserve Barça’s interests. But they don’t know how to do so. Or, even worse, they don’t dare to do so. And Pique is left to come out to set fire to the Madrid media cavern. The same Pique who has spent too long in the spotlight now. This Barça is far too unprotected!
