Mateo Kovacic: I hope I don't let down Real Madrid's fans

Mateo Kovacic is thrilled to be at Real Madrid and hopes he doesn’t disappoint.

“For me it’s a great honour to be at this team, with players who have been through every type of experience. Madrid is the biggest club in the world and I hope I don’t let down the fans,” he said, after his presentation.

In the dressing room he will meet his international team-mate with Croatia, Luka Modric.

“He’s a unique player, but everybody has their own characteristics and I’m not going to copy anybody,” explained the midfielder.

With regards to his positioning, Kovacic thinks that to fit into Rafa Benitez’s tactical scheme he is most likely to be in “defensive midfield, but it’s the decision of the coach”.

Quick transfer

His signing happened very quickly. “It was three or four days ago they made contact,” Kovacic explained. 

“Everything happened rapidly, I looked at the offer and accepted it, because it’s a chance you can’t let escape.”
