Juanfran reviews Spain's loss to Croatia

Juanfran Torres appeared before a press conference on Thursday with his usual sincerity.

Following the disappointing loss to Croatia, in which he and others were caught out on the break for the winning goal, the Atletico Madrid right-back said:

"I would be lying if I said that we have not thought much about that goal. We have gone over it in our minds, we know what happened and the over-confidence that is caused when things are going well. We thought that if there was going to be a winner, it would be for us."

The defender seemed hurt, but hopeful looking forward to the last 16 stage. He asserted that "we are going to correct our error against Italy. I am absolutely sure of that. It was over-confidence. The game was under control, we had more chances, we could have sealed the game with the second goal and then came the goal we conceded on the counter.

I am convinced that had we not already been qualified, to have in mind that one detail could knock you out, we would not have been so far forward and would not have allowed the counter which hurt us so much. This error would not happen against Italy and there's no need to keep thinking about it."

Giving a general overlook he considered "despite the defeat, we take out more positives than negatives from the game. You take more conclusions from a defeat. It was a game in which nobody expected to get beat, but it did not end up as we hoped. The defeat will serve to make us stronger and correct things. You learn from moments like these."

About Italy, he stated "they are a great team, it will be a close game, difficult and we will give our best to go through." In the case that another penalty is awarded to Spain, or even in the event of a penalty shoot-out, Juanfran admitted he did not know how it would be handled but felt this was somewhat normal:

"The coach will decide the taker, along with Toni Grande (the assistant) and the players who have the most confidence. Nothing more. But let's hope we win without the need for a penalty shoot-out."
