OFFICIAL: Manchester United confirm Mourinho appointment

Jose Mourinho has been appointed as manager of Manchester United, joining Pep Guardiola in Manchester, where the two will reignite their rivalry.

After Louis van Gaal was sacked earlier in the week, it was an open secret that the former Real Madrid and Chelsea boss would replace him at Old Trafford.

However, there were a few hurdles before the announcement could be made official, which eventually happened on Friday morning.

Mourinho has signed a three-year contract with the club with an option included which would allow him to extend his stay until at least 2020.

Ed Woodward, United’s chief executive, said: “Jose is quite simply the best manager in the game today. He has won trophies and inspired players in countries across Europe and, of course, he knows the Premier League very well, having won three titles here.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome him to Manchester United. His track record of success is ideal to take the club forward."

As well as Madrid and Chelsea, Mourinho has also coached Porto and Inter Milan, winning the Champions League with both.

His spell in Spain was notable for his constant clashes with Guardiola, who will take over at Manchester City next season.
