My doubts about Barça's Luis Suarez signing

My doubts about Barça's Luis Suarez signing

I'm not crazy enough to doubt the qualities Luis Suarez has as a footballer. In fact, during his time at Ajax I was among those who could not understand why Barcelona didn't try and sign him - I considered him a dominating player who could have brought a lot to the team.

The Uruguyan was a triumph with the Dutch side and has grown significantly with both Liverpool and Uruguay since.

Seen this way, it is not doubt that his signing for Barça is a hit. We undoubtedly have one of the best strikers in the world and, as such, it is only right that he is of interest to Barcelona.

However for me, frankly, his signing presents me with a series of doubts.

It is clear what we have paid for him is a lot, although what the exact amount is is the least of my worries. I have always maintained the belief that you can only tell if a player is cheap or expensive when you have seen their presence on the team.

There are players who have cost very little but have worked out expensively. There are others whom a lot has been paid for, but they have ended up seeming very cheap.

I basically have three doubts over the signing of Luis Suarez.

The first is his character. I denounce racist remarks and biting rivals, regardless of whether a player is easy to provoke. That is his big weakness. And his rivals already know that - all the players that will face him in la Liga BBVA.

In an interview with SPORT this week, Hristo Stoichkov warned Suarez "people are going to make life very difficult for him."

And he speaks with the knowledge of what happened to him.

This past season we have seen the patience that Neymar has shown while having to deal with a number of problems. And we know that on a football pitch there are constant provocations.

Psychologists say that as Suarez has bitten opponents three times, he will most likely do so again. That will lead to another hefty ban.

My second doubt is more sporting. Much has been said about how difficult it is to have two "super cracks" in the same team. The whole two cocks in the same house thing... Well now there will be three cocks that must share a dressing room, egos, compliments and pampering. Will there be room?

Third and final doubt. With three forwards such as Neymar, Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, who all have many years ahead of them, what forward would want to join the club knowing their options of playing would be minimal?

And what will the role of Pedro be, should he stay? And can Gerard Deulofeu have the incredible future we expect stuck behind the three of the best forwards in the world?

All of these doubts, and especially the impact it could have on the image of the club should the Uruguayan commit another serious error on the pitch, are what have led me to think, today, that Barça should not have signed Suarez.

I know he has the talent that, in a few months, could lead to me admitting I was wrong. And hopefully when the season ends I will have to eat this article with humble pie.

I promise that would not be a problem for me. Quite the contrary. But, today, I have too many doubts.
