Busquets will be handed a bumper contract to stay at Barça

When Barcelona eventually finalise a deal for their shirt sponsorship over the coming years, Sergio Busquets will handed improved terms almost immediately. That’s the club’s idea and Josep Maria Bartomeu has already translated it to the player. “While you’re at this level, you will be among the best paid,” the president said in a chat with the midfielder. The club believe a new sponsorship agreement will be in place in the coming weeks and so the new contract should follow.

Busquets is currently the fourth best paid player in the squad, behind Andres Iniesta, Gerard Pique and Lionel Messi. The Argentine’s salary is far superior to any of his team-mates. With the renewal, which should arrive before the end of the season, Busquets will become the third best paid, a position which he will lose when Neymar signs new terms - the Brazilian is currently the seventh highest paid member of the squad.

It’s surprising to see Neymar so low (graphic attached), with his salary registering at 7.5 million euros per season, as the club revealed in documents previously - it’s roughly the same as Luis Suarez earns. The Uruguayan should see his terms improved next season, too, as long as he continues to display the same level of performance.

THE FUTURE

In an interview with ESPN, Busquets explained, in reference to his future, that he has “always said that only two people can make me change my decision to be here [Barcelona]. One is my wife, who is very happy here and is a Barça fan, so I don’t think we have a problem on a personal level.”

Up until this point, everything is normal for fans of the Catalan club. But alarm bells will be ringing by the second point made by the Spain international: “On a sporting level, the other person would be Guardiola. It’s clear I owe him a lot and for me to work with him [again] would be an honour.”

However, he did add: “But [Guardiola] knows my club is Barça and he knows it’s best for me and the club to stay here, so I don’t think he will ask for me [at Manchester City].”

A few days ago Busquets was linked with Manchester City and in England there are constant reports that Guardiola will go ‘shopping’ at Barcelona - although SPORT revealed he has no plans to sign any Barça players who are not on the market

Busquets hasn’t ruled out playing elsewhere in the future, although he would like to finish his career at Barça: “If it was for money, I would already have left the club,” he's said. Barça are now in charge of making sure he’s not tempted.
