Barcelona star Lionel Messi says he does not "know where I will be next year"

Lionel Messi says he doesn't know where he'll be playing his football next year.

Speaking in Switzerland ahead of Monday night's Ballon d'Or ceremony, he revealed that he's always wanted to stay at Barcelona, but admitted that things can change in football.

It comes less than 24 hours after Barça's No.10 had told Barça TV that he has "no intention" of leaving after a week of high tension at the club.

"I'm not sure what's going to happen, whether I'd go to Newell's..." Messi pondered about his long-term future.

"I don't know where I will be next year. I've always said I want to end my career at Barcelona, but as Cristiano [Ronaldo] just said, nobody knows what the future holds."

It's the third time in less than two years that Messi has suggested his career will not necessarily finish in Catalonia.

As recently as November he suggested to the newspaper Olé that he may one day leave Camp Nou, such is the nature of football.

Rumours of a fallout between Messi and Luis Enrique sparked rumours of a move the Premier League last week, but the 27-year-old insisted on Sunday that talk of a move to Manchester City or chelsea was "all lies".

Given his €250million release clause, there are very few clubs that could find a away around FIFA's financial fair play rules.

Real Madrid would be one of them, but it is extremely unlikely that Messi would make the unthinkable switch to Barcelona's eternal rivals.

However, he did say that he would have liked the opportunity to play with Ronaldo.

"What [Ronaldo] has done over the last year has been impressive," Messi said in Zurich, where the Ballon d'Or ceremony is being held.

"He's won the Champions League and scored so many goals. He'll go down as one of the best of all time. I would love to have played alongside him."
