De Gregorio: "FIFA's presidential elections will go ahead as planned"

FIFA spokesman Walter de Gregorio said in an extraordinary press conference on Wednesday that FIFA's elections will go ahead.

De Gregorio, the organisations director of communications, was speaking after various FIFA officials were arrested in Switzerland on Wednesday morning.

They have been charged with "widespread corruption" over the last two decades, involving the awarding of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to Russia and Qatar.

However, FIFA, who are holding their annual meeting this week and are due to vote on a new president, say the elections will go on.

"It's a difficult moment for us," De Gregorio said.

"But the conference [including the elections] will continue, because one has nothing to do with the other."

He also guaranteed that neither the president of FIFA, Sepp Blatter, nor Jerome Valcke, are involved in such legal proceedings.
