The Asian country hopes the former England star can increase interest in the sport

China want to use David Beckham to help them kick on in international football.

According to the Daily Mirror, the former Manchester United and Real Madrid player has been recruited by the Chinese government to inspire the next generation of the country's footballers.

Beckham is said to be friends with Chinese president Xi Jinping, who has started the initiative.

With Adidas' collaboration, who Beckham signed a contract for life with in 2003, the Chinese federation believe the Englishman's image will boost the sport's popularity -- he has a big reputation in Asia.

They hope it will help China become a force at World Cups from 2022 and beyond.

The initial plan is for Becks to appear on Chinese television on a daily basis, offering advice to youngsters on how to improve through training.

It will be shown on CETV -- which is broadcast in 400,000 schools across China with an audience of 971 million people.

Beckham says in the videos: "I started to learn football when I was very young. It really is the best time to start. My advice to you is to take your time, build a solid foundation with basic skills.

“If you practice every day you will get better. Best wishes to China’s future football stars.”
