The world No 2 beat Richard Gasquet in straight sets to give Switzerland a 3-1 final lead over France in Lille.

Federer, who has 17 grand slam titles and an Olympic gold, among various World Tour and Masters prizes, has now completed his mission.

He beat Gasquet 6-4 6-2 6-2 at the Stade Pierre Mauroy, dropping to his knees at the end of the match to celebrate.

Switzerland have not come close to winning the Davis Cup since they finished second in 1992.
