Referee Iglesias Villanueva blew the final whistle before Gabriel could take a shot which could have been the equaliser

Referee Iglesias Villanueva became the protagonist of Real Madrid's 2-1 win over Leganes with a highly controversial decision right at the end of the game.

The official blew the final whistle just as Leganes captain Gabriel was shaping to shoot at goal from just outside the box, denying the striker the chance to score the equaliser.

The decision provoked outrage among the Leganes players, who complained to Iglesias Villanueva about the decision and his overall performance in the game.

Madrid had benefitted from two calls in their favour for their goals, scored by Gareth Bale in the eighth minute and Borja Mayoral just before half-time, to the fury of Leganes, who appealed for offside in both decisions.

Darko Brasanac pulled a deserved goal back for 'Lega' in the 66th minute after the Madrid minnows had squandered some great chances to score earlier in the first half, including Nordin Amrabat clipping the crossbar.

They kept on searching for an equaliser against a heavily rotated Madrid team that was missing Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos among others.

Iglesias Villanueva had only given two minutes of added time, and blew up just as Gabriel was getting ready to shoot at Madrid goalkeeper Kiko Casilla.

Gabriel vented his fury at the referee and was sent off after the whistle had blown, meaning he will be suspended for his team's next game.

The Leganes players continued with their complaints while Gabriel marched off towards the dressing room to ensure he did not get himself in any more trouble.
