Los Blancos' scoring run was ended by Real Betis at the Bernabeu

Madrid and Santos both scored in 73 consecutive competitive games

Real Madrid's scoring run ended after 512 days and they failed to beat the record set by Pele's Santos, matching the Brazilian's run of scoring in 73 consecutive competitive games.

Madrid's run began on April 30, 2016, when they beat Real Sociedad but it ended on Wednesday after they were beaten 1-0 at home by Real Betis.

After matching Santos' record -- which was set between 1961 and 1963 -- at Anoeta against La Real on Sunday, Zinedine Zidane's side were unable to go one better.

It was the first time since April 26, 2016, that Madrid have failed to score in a game, when they drew 0-0 with Manchester City in the Champions League semifinal at the Etihad Stadium. Four days later, the run, which lasted one year, five months and 200 goals, began.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored the most in that time with 49, followed by Karim Benzema and Alvaro Morata (who has since left for Chelsea), both of whom scored 21. And 22 different players scored in the run.

River Plate's RECORD

Madrid, however, remain short of River Plate's record. The Argentine scored in 96 consecutive games between 1936 and 1939, all of which were official matches: 93 in the league and three in national and international cups.

In almost four years, from Sept. 13, 1936 until June 4, 1939, River won 92 matches, drew 13 and lost 11, scoring 316 goals (3.3 per game) and winning six trophies (Primera División x2, Copas Nacionales x2, Copas Rioplatense x2).
