Real Madrid suffered against Athletic club and were lucky to come away with a win from the Santiago Bernabeu
Real Madrid needed a late Alvaro Morata goal to go top of La Liga as Athletic Bilbao held them to a draw at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Karim Benzema opened the scoring after seven minutes after being fed by Isco after Enric Saborit slipped and allowed the midfielder to cut the ball back to the Frenchman.
But Sabin Merino equalised later in the first-half after a defensive mishap in the Madrid area with Pepe and Dani Carvajal losing the plot and allowing the forward to equalise.
Madrid missed several openings in the second period as both Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo floundered but eventually got their goal when Alvaro Morata pounced after his own shot had been saved.
It was another poor performance in total from Madrid and if Inaki Williams had been more accurate when clean through, they could have shipped a late equaliser.
