The Betis striker scored the winning goal at the Bernabeu in stoppage time

Madrid have still not won a home game in the league this season

Antonio Sanabria scored a stoppage time winner as Real Betis stunned Real Madrid to leave Zinedine Zidane’s side lagging seven points behind early leaders Barcelona.

Madrid came into the game at the Santiago Bernabeu having drawn their first two home games of the season, against Valencia and Levante.

However, with Cristiano Ronaldo back from a five-game ban, they were hopeful of ending that run against Betis.

But they weren’t counting on an inspired performance from Antonio Adan, once of Madrid himself, and a tactical masterplan from Quique Setien.

Betis played good football throughout the game and while this was a smash and grab, it wasn’t just a smash and grab.

Madrid, obviously, had the best chances and after an even first half they built up a head of steam in the second period.

Ronaldo wasted several chances, though, missing the target, while Dani Carvajal was denied by the best.

Gareth Bale thought he’d opened the scoring with a clever flick, but Adan tipped it on to the post before denying Borja Mayoral in stoppage time, too.

As Zidane went for the three points, removing the injured Marcelo, Isco and Luka Modric for Lucas Vazquez, Marco Asensio and Mayoral respectively, Betis stuck to their idea.

And with Madrid flying forward, they began to find space on the counter.

They’d already wasted several counter-attacks when the ball found Antonio Barragan on the edge of the box, who took his time and picked out former Barcelona player Sanabria to head home a 94th minute winner.

As well as stealing the three points from Madrid, it also ended Los Blancos’ run of scoring in 73 consecutive games.
