The Portuguese coach confirmed a bid was made to Real Madrid

In the end the Red Devils signed Everton striker Romelu Lukaku

Manchester United coach Jose Mourinho admitted the club had made an offer for Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata.

Mourinho said he felt the offers made were "fair" but that Madrid were within their right to reject them and name their own price.

“I don’t like to speak about players who aren’t ours because Morata is not our player," he said from United's tour in Los Angeles.

"I am nobody to speak about players from Real Madrid.

“Yes, we have had interest, that is obvious and it’s public. We have not come to an economic agreement, that is obvious as well. But it’s a Real Madrid’s right to ask for their players the amount of money that they want.

"[We made] offers we thought were fair and yet no agreement was reached."

United signed Everton striker Romelu Lukaku for 85 million euros in the end, but Mourinho insisted the Belgian was not second choice.
