Hamstring injury leaves Real Madrid without Varane for several weeks

The French defender is set for a spell on the sidelines after getting injured in Valencia

Real Madrid will be without centre-back Raphael Varane for the coming weeks. The club have not revealed how long he will be sidelined, but have confirmed he has a hamstring injury.

"Following tests carried out today on Raphael Varane at the Sanitas La Moraleja University Hospital, he has been diagnosed with a grade 2 muscle strain in his left hamstring," a statement said. "His recovery will continue to be assessed."

Madrid and Zinedine Zidane, therefore, will be without an important part of their team after he picked up the injury in the loss to Valencia at Mestalla on Wednesday.

Early reports indicate the Frenchman will be out for between three and five weeks.

That means he will miss the second leg of the Champions League against Napoli on Mar. 7, but he could be back for the Madrid derby. He will also miss league games against UD Las Palmas, Eibar, Betis and Athletic.

He would be a doubt for Alaves, although he would be back for the quarter-final of the Champions League if Madrid progress.
