Real Madrid wave goodbye to the treble as Celta Vigo knock them out of the Copa

Real Madrid's treble dream is over after they were knocked out of the Copa del Rey by Celta Vigo.

With a long injury list and a 2-1 defeat from the first leg to turn around, the odds were always stacked against Zinedine Zidane's side.

And the a tough task became even tougher when Danilo put through his own net in the first half.

Madrid had controlled large parts of the opening stages, with Cristiano Ronaldo seeing a header tipped on to the bar and then hitting the post with the rebound when it looked easier to score.

Celta grew into the game, though, and began to cause a makeshift Madrid back four problems.

Kiko Casilla had already made several saves when he denied John Guidetti, only for the ball to cannon back into the empty net of the helpless Danilo.

Ronaldo scored a free-kick to get Los Blancos back into the tie but Daniel Wass' well struck finish killed the game late on.

A header from Lucas Vazquez made it 2-2 on the night going into stoppage time.

That meant one more Madrid goal would have seen them reach the semifinal via the away goals rule, but there was to be no Sergio Ramos moment at Balaidos.

Instead, Celta held on to take their place in the last four with Atletico Madrid and Alves.

Barcelona or Real Sociedad will fight it out for the final place in the semifinal at Camp Nou on Thursday.

As for Madrid, they will now have to focus on La Liga and the Champions League.
