The Argentine coach has previously worked in England with Liverpool

Pellegrino impressed with Alaves last season, reaching the Copa del Rey final

Southampton have confirmed the appointment of Mauricio Pellegrino as their new coach on a three-year deal. 

The Argentine joins the club from Alaves, who he left at the end of the season after a ninth-placed finish in La Liga and a run to the Copa del Rey final.  

“I am really happy to become the new coach of Southampton Football Club," he told the club's official website. "The club has a great reputation for having a strong and stable structure, competing in the Premier League and playing attractive football.

“I think my philosophy and the culture of the club will work well together. We have to be a team on and off the pitch; I want to make the supporters proud of the players and to feel part of the game every week. I want to win matches, be successful and develop a team spirit where everyone gives 100 per cent and supports each other.

“I am excited and passionate about what the future holds for us and look forward to meeting the players and beginning our preparation for the new season.”

Pellegrino previously worked in England at Rafa Benitez's assistanct at Liverpool and followed the Spanish coach to Inter Milan in 2010. 

His first role on his onw was short-lived at Valencia and he built his reputation back in Argentina with Estudiantes and Independiente. 

Following Alaves' prmotion to La Liga last summer he was installed as the Basque side's boss and left in May after an impressive season at the helm.
