England 1-2 Iceland: Hodsgon quits as Three Lions Brexit Euro 2016

Roy Hodgson has resigned from his role as England manager after overseeing his country’s 2-1 defeat to Iceland in the last 16 of the European Championships.

England took the lead via a Wayne Rooney penalty in the fourth minute, but saw the game turn on its head inside the opening 20 minutes as Iceland produced one of the shocks of the tournament to date.

Raheem Sterling was brought down in the area early on by Hannes Thor Halldorsson in a frantic start to the game and Rooney provided the finish from the penalty spot.

But Iceland, the smallest nation at Euro 2016, hit back immediately when Ragnar Sigurdsson got on the end of a long throw from Aron Gunnarsson.

Things went from bad to worse for England in the 19th minute when Joe Hart’s blunder allowed Kolbeinn Sigthorsson shot to slip through.

England had the majority of the possession in the second half but they looked lethargic and too many players failed to perform.

Iceland rarely looked troubled and deservedly hung on to secure a famous victory and set up a quarter-final with France.

It left Hodgson with little chance but to resign, following in the footsteps of David Cameron, who on Friday resigned at Prime Minister of the United Kingdom after losing the referendum on membership to the European Union.

"I'm sorry it will have to end this way but these things happen," Hodgson said in a press conference, before refusing to take questions.

"I hope you will still be able to see an England team in a final of a major tournament soon.

"Now is the time for someone else to oversee the progress of a hungry and extremely talented group of players. They have done fantastically, and done everything asked of them."

For the second time in a week, England left Europe.
