Andres Iniesta featured in 37 of the 59 games Barcelona played this season. 62 per cent. Less than in the previous two seasons (70 per cent).

Recently turned 33, he’s conscious that he is at a decisive moment of his career because he couldn’t summon the strength to continue at the rhythm Luis Enrique imposed.

During the to-and-fro that Barcelona games have been during the last three years, Iniesta has been out of his natural habitat, ending up with his tongue hanging out. The ball passes too quickly by the centre of the pitch, there is little ‘pause’ and the players needed more kilometres on the clock than time on the ball. Iniesta was minimised.

Despite that he still played his part and thanks to his talent, he shone when was most necessary. In the Copa del Rey final he was better than Messi. He gave a recital of pride, technique and valour. Now comes change and a different way of working should suit him well.

The new coach should look at the needs of Andres Iniesta because, in the end, they are the same as the needs of Barcelona.
