Not being one of the seeded group leaders could cost Spain

Messi has previously played in three friendlies against the country he plays in

Spain will not be one of the seeded group leaders at the World Cup, with the draw coming up in December in Moscow. This circumstance could lead to them being drawn against Argentina, Brazil or Germany at worst - and Poland at best.

Crossing paths with Messi and Neymar would be a first for Spain. They have never played an official game against Argentina in Messi's era. Previously they clashed in 1966 in England at Villa Park at the World Cup.

In friendlies Messi's Argentina have lost twice and beaten Spain once

Messi has played just thrice against Spain. On 11 October 2006 he played 62 minutes in Mucia against Luis Aragones' side in a 2-1 defeat. Then in 2009, November 14, they lost 2-1 again against Del Bosque's side, while Maradona was in charge of Argentina. The final game finished 4-1 to Argentina at the Monumental in Buenos Aires in 2010.

Neymar has faced Spain in the Confederations Cup in 2013, at the Maracana in the final, scoring in a 3-0 win.
