Simeone: Vietto is close to signing for Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid could confirm the signing of Argentine forward Luciano Vietto on a five-year-deal within the coming hours, according to an interview between Diego Simeone and AS.

The player has been one of the revelations of the season for Villarreal, having previously struggled to break into Racing Club's first team back in his native country, with Simeone divulging some information about the potential deal on Wednesday morning.

"He is a target, as much as improving our footballing future is. We are close. And I hope that I can count on using him for next season, because he is a player that has extraordinary ability, as a second striker, during offensive interplay and in front of goal."

Vietto, 21, may have already reached an agreement with Los Colchoneros, with the capital club still needing to make a deal with his parent club Villarreal. In the case of no progress being made during negotiations, Atletico may be forced to trigger the Argentine's release clause of 20 million euros.

The young forward had until recently been on the list of possible signings for Barça, but no transfer movement will be made by the club until the future of its hierarchy is decided by July's elections.
