Shakhtar Donetsk 3-4 Real Madrid: Los Blancos nearly stunned

Real Madrid nearly managed it. They nearly managed to get stung by four goals again, but held on and eventually saw off Shakhtar Donetsk in Lviv.

Having gone four goals up, Rafa Benitez's side shipped three but eventually saw the game out to guarantee their position at the top of Champions League group A.

Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring, heading home from point-blank range after Gareth Bale had skipped round goalkeeper Pyatov on the left and crossed.

Ronaldo set up the second, feeding Luka Modric, before rolling the ball to Dani Carvajal who swung home the third.

Bale broke and played in Ronaldo to ram home from close range for No 4, with the game looking done and dusted.

But Casemiro gave away a penalty and Alex Teixeira fired past Kiko Casilla, before Dentinho and Teixeira again found the net to give Rafa a fright.

In the end Madrid hung on, but their defence has now shipped 10 goals in three games.
