Ronaldo: Lionel Messi or Cristiano might come and play in the USA

Former Barcelona and Real Madrid player Ronaldo says he "would pay from my own pocket to sign Lionel Messi".

The former striker was speaking in a promotional act for the North American Soccer League, and said he could see Messi playing in America at some point.

The co-owner of Fort Lauderdale Strikers, in the US second division, spoke about big sports stars coming to the states.

"In the Strikers we don't have borders. This club will be great. Why not Messi? Why not Cristiano Ronaldo?

"In a few years we can accomplish it. Nothing is impossible. The United States is the second country in the world, behind China, where football is growing.

"Many famous players want to come to live in the south in Florida for the quality of life, who wouldn't want to live here?"

Asked if Ronaldo himself could play, the 38-year-old said: "I could play some games, more likely if we get to the play-offs.

"Still, I have to get fit so as not to go out there and embarrass the coach."
