A repeat of 2009 and 2012, it's Barcelona v Athletic Club again

A repeat of 2009 and 2012, it's Barcelona v Athletic Club again

There will be no-all Catalan final. Espanyol were dismissed by Athletic Club at the Cornella 2-0, thanks to goals from Aritz Aduriz and Xabi Etxeita.

Instead, we will relive the 2009 and 2012 finals from the Mestalla and Vicente Calderon, as these sides meet each other at the final hurdle of a competition for the eighth time.

Espanyol had performed so admirably on the way to the semi-final, seeing off teams including Valencia and Sevilla, that it was a shame to see them fall like this, in front of a full house.

But the truth was, from the moment Aduriz fired home in the first half, Sergio Gonzalez's side never truly looked like overhauling their Basque rivals.

When Etxeita's second came along it ruled out the prospect of extra-time, and effectively ended the game - given Espanyol needed to net three.

A 1-1 score in the first leg at the new San Mames had given the Pericos a slight advantage, but they will rue the chances they wasted in that initial encounter.

Barcelona will not be afraid of Athletic, given they beat them 5-2 in that ground just a few weeks ago.
