Atletico boss Simeone given eight game ban

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone has been hit with an eight-match touchline ban following his sending off in the Spanish Supercopa last Friday.

With Atletico 2-1 up on aggregate, Simeone was sent to the stands by referee David Fernández Borbalán for a series of antics.

He has been banned for four games for slapping the back of the fourth official's head, two for protesting, one for sarcastically applauding his dismissal and another for remaining in the stands and giving instructions during the game.

Simeone was already set to be banned from the touchline for Monday night's la Liga opener against Rayo Vallecano, so his ban will kick in afterwards.

It means he will miss the first Madrid derby in September, with his assistant German Burgos likely to take over on the bench.

However, while Simeone has been sanctioned, the disciplinary committee confirmed they wouldn't take action against Cristiano Ronaldo after the Portuguese forward appeared to punch Diego Godin in the same game.
