Player ratings: Benzema, Ronaldo and James shine in Real Madrid win

Casillas 6 - Could do nothing with the opener. Made a good stop from a Mathieu piledriver in the second half.

Carvajal 7 - Arguably should have been tighter to Neymar for his goal but grew into the game. Brilliant block to stop the Brazilian grabbing a second.

Ramos 6 - A solid performance on his comeback from injury. Perhaps he should have done more to stop Neymar opening the scoring.

Pepe 7 - A good clearing header in the first half and a better attacking one in the second, powerfully nodding into the bottom left corner to send Real Madrid into the lead.

Marcelo 8 - Good running down the left and caused havoc with a low ball across the face of goal, before winning a penalty when Pique handled a similar cross.

Modric 8 - A calm display in the centre and helped Real Madrid control the game. He has learned to pull the strings despite all the superstars ahead of him, and is the heartbeat of this team.

Kroos 8 - As the game progressed, so did his influence. Becoming a key part of the side already and although not like-for-like, doing a good job of replacing Xabi Alonso.

Isco 8 - Great work, then a slightly sloppy pass to Ronaldo in the build up to the third goal, but the Portugal star turned it around. Mature display. Hailed by the Bernabeu when he was substituted.

James 8 - Unselfishly played in Benzema to net the third goal. Looked a good fit in his first true test as a Madrid star.

Ronaldo 9 - Broke Bravo's clean sheet streak by tucking his penalty into the bottom right corner. Salvaged a poor Isco pass to play a key part in the third goal. Was too unselfish - yeah, really - when he passed instead of shooting when Real chased a fourth.

Benzema 9 - Spurned a good early chance to equalise, flicking the ball wide of Bravo's right-hand post. Was much more unlucky with a header that came back off the bar and the rebound which also unbelievably clipped the woodwork. Third time's a charm though, and he finished with aplomb when Real Madrid broke quickly for the third.
