Pique hits back at claims he stuck middle finger up in Spain anthem

Gerard Pique has responded to “stupid” claims that he stuck his middle finger up during Spain’s national anthem prior to their Euro 2016 defeat to Croatia.

It was controversially claimed by some people and media that the Barcelona defender’s gesture was deliberate and was meant as a lack of respect towards the country.

He responded on Twitter after the game: “I’m crossing my fingers during the anthem. Stop looking for controversy where there is none and let’s try and win the European Championships together.”

Pique was also asked about what had happened in the mixed zone after the game.

“I think it's a stupid controversy,” he responded, after pointing out he’d already tweeted his thoughts.

“If I’m here [with Spain] it’s because I feel proud of this team and this family.

“In no way did I disrespect the anthem, as I have never disrespected this country or this team.

“We all have to be together as one - these controversies don’t take us anywhere.”

In addition, the Spanish Football Federation were angry at the excessive repercussions of a gesture which never happened and accused the media of mounting a campaign against Pique.
