Perez says it's "not normal" to win La Liga with more than 90 points

Real Madird president Florentino Perez has touched on the old ‘Villarato’ theory to justify his club’s continued failings in La Liga. Aware that the 'undecima' success in Milan saved Madrid’s season after only winning one league title since his return to the club in 2009, Perez took advantage of an interview with Marca to throw around insinuations like always.

Perez was asked first what Madrid had to do to win La Liga: “Real Madrid have had a really good league campaign, as they did last season and in the years before. Since I returned, in 2009, the points we’ve earned would have been enough to win all the leagues. It’s not normal to lose a league with 91 points, with 94, with 92… No-one has ever had so many points. It deserves special analysis.”

What analysis? he was asked. To which the Madrid president responded in a very cryptic manner: “What is not normal, is not normal. It’s not normal to win a league with more than 90 points, not here [in Spain] or in any other league in the world. To win La Liga in recent years we had to have 100 points and 120 goals. That doesn’t happen in any other league in the world. I’m saying nothing. Atletico won La Liga with 90 points and I would like to win one with 90, 92 or 94, not with 100. For us it’s very difficult to win La Liga.” His strategy is only to hide his side’s continued failings and the success of Barcelona, who won their second consecutive league this season.

*The ‘Villarato’ is a term coined by journalist Alfredo Relano and relates to the president of the RFEF Angel Maria Villar. The general idea of the ‘Villarato’ is that Barcelona are favoured in Spanish competitions, while Madrid are prejudiced, principally through referring errors and the like.
