Four reasons Madrid do not want to host Copa final

The Santiago Bernabeu has held 13 Copa del Rey finals since 1976-77, when it stopped being the Copa del Generalisimo, four of those under the presidency of Florentino Perez. None of those finals under Perez have featured Barcelona. Two saw Madrid participate, while the others featured 'neutral' teams - Zaragoza, Osasuna, Betis and Espanyol.

The first two reasons

The two Copa del Rey finals at the Bernabeu with Madrid as a finalist ended in disaster. They lost the first against Dportivo 2-1, especially relevant as it was a final practically prepared for them to celebrate their 100th anniversary - centenary year - and went into the game as clear favourites.

The second saw them lose to local rivals Atletico Madrid, 2-1 in extra-time. After these, Florentino decided to shut the door on hosting the Copa del Rey final.

The third reason

However, the most painful memory for Real Madrid fans is the 1996-97 final, which Barcelona played against Betis. With a team featuring Figo, Baia, Luis Enrique and Amunike, they won in extra-time. Then-president Joan Gaspart managed to get the Barcelona anthem played over the Madrid sound system several times, a dagger to Madrid's heart. Since then, they have not played a final at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The fourth reason

Madrid are still upset about being disqualified from the competition because of the Cheryshev case. They did not like being humiliated.
