Espanyol 1-1 Celta Vigo: Asensio strike eases relegation threat

Marco Asensio’s brilliant strike edged Espanyol a point closer to safety as they drew 1-1 at home to Celta Vigo on Tuesday.

The visitors, who remain in a Europa League spot in sixth place, had opened the scoring when Iago Aspas got on the end of a cross from Fabio Orellana after Abraham had given the ball away up the other end.

Espanyol looked genuine contenders for relegation when they were thumped by Real Sociedad two months ago, but they now have an eight point cushion on Sporting Gijon, who occupy the third and final spot in the bottom three.

The Pericos have just four matches remaining, although the majority of the other sides have five, which are set to be played on Wednesday and Thursday this week.

Abraham had the game’s first chance, but his shot was too predictable, drawing a comfortable save from Sergio Alvaro, much to the disappointment of the Cornella-El Prat crowd.

Half chances were then exchanged between both sides in an open game, before Celta hit on the break in the 28th minute.

Asensio had created space for Abraham in the penalty area, but the midfielder dallied on the ball, giving possession away. Celta raced away, with Aspas hanging out a leg to turn home Orellana’s perfect right wing cross.

Espanyol struck back in style before half time. Real Madrid loanee Asensio, who has been his team’s best player this season, rifling home on the volley from the edge of the area.

Openings were few and far between after the break, though, and both sides seemed to reluctantly accept a point.

Nolito had a the best chance for Celta, heading over when unmarked at the far post, while a well-placed Asensio cross had too much power for Gerard Moreno, who was unable to turn the ball over the line from close range.
