David Moyes appointed Real Sociedad manager: Former Manchester United boss has a new job with La Real

David Moyes has been appointed the manager of Real Sociedad.

The former Manchester United boss had been out of work since he was dismissed last season by the fallen Premier League giants.

Jagoba Arrasate was sacked after he endured a torrid start to the season with the Basque side, getting them knocked out of Europe.

He would have been pleased with how his new charges played against La Liga champions Atletico Madrid on Sunday night, earning a hard-fought 2-1 win at Anoeta.

Perhaps it was enough to convince the Scotsman to take over, because the board had made it clear to him that if he wanted to be the new manager, the job was his.

The unlucky loser was Pepe Mel, the former West Brom boss, who would have taken over had Moyes turned down the job.

The club released a statement reading: "The manager David Moyes has been chosen as the new trainer of Real Sociedad. Born April 25, 1963 in Glasgow, he has extensive experience both in his time as a player and on the bench.

"He is the first Scot to manage the club in the history of the txuri-urdin."

Moyes will take over until June 2016.

He has an easy start to life in La Liga, with only a Basque derby against Athletic Club on December 14 and the visit of Barcelona to Anoeta on January 4 potentially concerning dates on the fixture list.
