64% of Cristiano Ronaldo's Twitter followers are fake or inactive

Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo is the sports person most followed on Twitter, with 34 million subscribing to his account.

However, a Diario Gol study, doing a Twitter Audit on his acccount, has shown that 64% of Ronaldo's followers are either fake or inactive. Essentially, 21 million of Ronaldo's followers are not real.

This percentage doesn't necessarily imply that the Portuguese footballer has fraudulently obtained them, for example, by buying followers, a practise that many "celebrities" do, although this is frowned upon by the Twitter community.

The price to put on 1,000 followers is around €20, while it would cost €1,800 to add 250,000.

It's quite possible that many of that 64% started to use Twitter and then abandoned it.

Ronaldo's social media profiles are managed by Portuguese company Polaris Sport, the Gestifute group, owned by the player's agent, Jorge Mendes.
