El Confidencial: Perez wanted Zidane to take over Marseille

After losing to Caen in the first game of the league season, Marcelo Bielsa quit as coach of Marseille. That was in August of last year and, at that moment, Florentino Perez tried to make Zindine Zidane the Argentine's replacement.

According to El Confidencial, the Real Madrid president gave orders to try and place Zidane at Marseille. "He called [Marseille] and offered [Zidane]," it's been said. Perez wanted the French coach to grow at another club before taking over at Madrid, which eventually happened half way through the season when Rafa Benitez was sacked.

His attempt to move Zidane into the position did not work out, though, with Marseille going for Michel instead. However, the club's president, Vicent Labrune, recognised that was an error: "I've committed errors, like appointing Michel and not sacking him sooner," he said, something Perez did not admit with Benitez.

On Saturday, after the Champions League final, if Madrid win, Zidane will have earned his right to continue. In the case that he loses, it can't be ruled out that Perez decides to look for another manager, although it's expected Zidane will still be in charge after the summer.
